This week will see the Spring auctions take place in New York. Sotheby’s and Christie’s are offering a wonderful array of works of art reflecting the extraordinary successes of their London auctions in March. The highlights, as ever at this time of year, are plentiful. Sotheby’s are offering works from the estate of Anne Windfohr Marion including a brilliant Kenneth Noland ‘Target’ painting: ‘Rocker’, two paintings by Richard Diebenkorn and the most wonderful Clyfford Still of 1948. In their main sales the Basquiat, ‘Versus Medici’ will be a showstopper as well as the Monet ‘Nympheas’ that I recall from its last foray at auction back in 2004.
Christie’s have also garnered a stunning array of work including a Monet ‘Waterloo Bridge’, a monumental 1932 Picasso painting depicting Marie Therese Walter and two vital little Seurat studies central to the painting ‘Un Dimanche d’été a l’île de La Grand Jatte’. In the post-war field Joan Mitchell and her fellow Abstract Expressionist Lee Krasner are represented while in the 21st Century auction there are striking works by Christopher Wool, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mark Bradford and other luminaries.
